From Seedling to Powder on your Table

Every pack of Sungrown Harvests pimento pepper powder starts with dirt under someone’s fingernails, not a factory line. It begins in small nursery trays on Trinidad soil — some in our own field in Cunupia, others grown by trusted farmers in Arima — where pepper seedlings push toward the sun, the first stubborn step toward something that’ll end up on your dinner table.

Our farmers watch these plants like family, working the rich Caribbean earth with care and patience, and hands that know exactly when a pepper is ready. Too early, and you lose the depth. Too late, and you lose the kick. We pick at the exact moment color, aroma, and heat hit their peak — and we’re picky about it.

Every pepper is hand-selected specifically for our process. Any that show blemishes or deformities get set aside — they don’t make it into our packs. That’s a choice, not an accident. Many spice companies lean on what the industry calls “grinders” — lower-grade peppers that cost less precisely because they’re not the best of the harvest. We don’t. It costs more, and it’s slower, but it’s the only way we know how to do this properly.

That same philosophy carries through to how we work with our farmers. We negotiate a fair, year-round price — not the lowest price we could get away with. This isn’t just about margins. It’s about making sure the people growing these peppers can keep growing them, season after season. Real agricultural sustainability in Trinidad and Tobago doesn’t happen by accident — it happens when farmers can count on a fair deal, year after year.

We’ve been building this, quietly and steadily, for eight years now. While it’s become common for other spice brands to blend in imported powders to cut costs, we’ve stuck to the long way — 100% Trinidad-grown, start to finish. It isn’t the most lucrative path. It’s the most sustainable one, and that’s the one we’re committed to.

When you sprinkle our Pimento Pepper Powder or shake out some Moruga Red Pepper Salt, you’re tasting the result of that decision — a seedling that pushed through Cunupia or Arima soil months ago, a farmer paid fairly for the work, and a process that never took the shortcut.

That’s not a slogan. That’s just how we do it.
